Why do some lawns look better than others? All lawns are not created equal by any means, and it all depends upon watering, feeding, weeding and mowing.  WATER  - Improve Overall Lawn Health & Appearance

  • Automation A sprinkler system allows you to automate your lawn care. This will save you both time and money, while making your life much easier.
  • Better Coverage A sprinkler system will do a better job watering your lawn than you could ever dream of doing.
  • Water to Save Money Installing an effective irrigation system conserve plenty of water. It is estimated that 70% of water usage in many households occur outside the house. With lawn sprinkler systems, 40% of this outside consumption can be saved. Compared with using a hose to water your yard, an irrigation system uses less water to keep your grass green and nourished
  • Resale Value Installing a sprinkler system will also greatly add to the value of your home

FEED

  • Test and fill your spreader Test your spreader opening and closing mechanism to ensure it works properly.  Once you’ve done this, be sure to leave it in the closed position until you are ready to fertilize. Fill your spreader with the appropriate fertilizer, based on the time of the year.  Be sure that you do this on a hard, stable surface and away from your lawn.
  • Apply the fertilizer Select an area on your lawn to start fertilizing. Adjust the spreader settings to the specifications listed on the back of the fertilizer bag. Adjust the spreader mechanism to open and begin walking at a normal speed. Do not overlap, skip or miss areas and be sure to shut off the spreader when turning or stopping.
  • Clean the spreader When you have finished applying the fertilizer to your entire lawn, be sure to thoroughly clean your spreader. To do this, simply hose off your spreader both inside and outside. Be sure that you do not rinse off your spreader while on the grass.
  • Water your lawn as necessary As always, be sure to read the manufacturer’s directions for your spreader and fertilizer.

WEED

  • Pre-emergent herbicides The best practice is to prevent lawn weeds before they happen.  This will help prevent weeds from taking hold in your turf in the first place. You only have to apply a pre-emergent once per year. Do it in the spring before plants or flowers start to emerge
  • Mulching Another good way to keep lawn weeds down is to mulch any flower beds or trees. For flower beds apply an even, 2 to inch layer across the entire bed. For trees, use a 3 to 4 inch layer, and spread it right up to the trunk of the tree.
  • Pull or dig weeds If you already have lawn weeds, pull them and dig their roots out with a weed or cultivator tool. If you have a serious amount of weeds, you may want to till up the entire area and reseed your grass.
  • Post-emergent herbicides You also may want to spray the weeds with a post-emergence herbicide. This will kill the weeds you have, but be careful; some of these herbicides can also kill your grass.

MOW

  • Mow grass Mow to 3 to 3.5 inches high. You can adjust most lawnmowers to cut at this height. Grass cut to 3 to 3.5 inches tall is less prone to insect, disease, and weed problems.
  • Mow frequently Cut off no more than a third of the height, Mow when the longest grass leaves are 4 to 4.5 inches tall. Kentucky bluegrass and fescue are common lawn grasses in the Midwest. They grow fastest in the cool weather of spring and fall. You may need to mow twice a week during these seasons, but less frequently during warm weather.
  • Leave the clippings Don’t bag your clippings during mowing or rake up the clippings. Leave them on the lawn to break down and return valuable nutrients to the soil. However, you should break up clumps of clippings by raking or mowing again so they don’t shade the grass. Mowing frequently in the spring and only when grass is dry will prevent clumping.

Remember to Water as Needed

  • Lawns need at least one inch of water per week when the heat is severe. Use a rain gauge to keep track of the amount of water received from rainfall and irrigation.
  • Water deeply and less frequently to encourage drought-tolerant roots.
  • Water early in the day to reduce evaporation and fungal growth.
  • Either water your lawn regularly and deeply, or don’t water at all. Don’t let your lawn go brown and dormant, then try to “water it back to life.” If your lawn goes dormant in summer, it should stay that way until fall – don’t worry, it should recover once the weather changes.
